Dear colleagues and friends,

The chain of phosphoanhydride bonds called inorganic polyphosphate (polyP) represents the simplest of biological polymers. Despite that simplicity, polyP characterization fell behind other biological polymers such as nucleic acid and proteins. For many years, polyP was poorly regarded and understudied. The development of novel analytical methods has allowed a recent explosion in polyP interest. Bacterial polyP represents both an energy source and a cation-phosphate store involved in gene transcription control, ultimately affecting virulence. The chaperoning property of polyP was discovered in this model. In eukaryotes, polyP is crucial in bone mineralization, cancer, and particularly in regulating the blood coagulation cascade. Other striking emerging discoveries are the crosstalk between polyP and inositol phosphate signalling, the ability of polyP to drive a protein post-translational modification (lysine polyphosphorylation), and the overactive polyP naturally occurring nanoparticles.  

Considering the wide range of processes affected by polyP, it is easy to envisage that scientists from very different research areas are encountering this polymer in their work. Therefore, it has become essential for the healthy development of polyP research to gather together these scientists who would otherwise rarely encounter each other.

With the polyP-centred FEBS workshop, we aim to create a fertile ground to share different expertise, discuss recent developments, and stimulate new collaborations, to create the foundations for future years of innovative polyP research. We envisage that a young and friendly atmosphere will improve the exchange of practical tips and opinions on the theoretical as well as practical aspects of polyP research. Gathering together polyP researchers of different backgrounds and career trajectories will be instrumental in building a much-needed community, necessary for the harmonic progression of this novel and exciting research field.
